Bolgheri is a medieval settlement within the municipality of Castagneto Carducci in Tuscany, sitting on a low hill among vineyards and fields. An old castle towers over the center, and narrow stone lanes connect small squares in the historic core.
The counts of Della Gherardesca ruled this place from medieval times and expanded the fortifications and wine production over the centuries. During the 19th century, the reputation of the region grew stronger through new grape varieties introduced from France.
The long avenue of cypress trees leads directly into the center and takes its name from a poem by Giosuè Carducci, who spent his childhood here. Many estates around the settlement offer tastings where visitors can sample the red wines produced in the area.
The approach along the cypress avenue runs about five kilometers and starts at the coastal road connecting Livorno to Grosseto. During summer, the narrow lanes can become very hot, so a visit in the morning or late afternoon works better.
A small nature reserve with wet meadows lies a few kilometers south and was created as the first private protected area in Italy. Water birds and herons nest among reeds and shallow ponds that visitors can observe from marked trails.
