Borromean Islands, Island group in Lake Maggiore, Italy.
The Borromean Islands are an island group in the western part of Lake Maggiore between Stresa and Verbania, formed by three main islands and two smaller rocks. Isola Bella is known for its terraced Baroque garden, Isola Madre hosts a large botanical garden, and Isola dei Pescatori is a small inhabited fishing village.
The Borromeo family acquired the islands from the 16th century onward and transformed them into aristocratic residences with gardens and palaces. The largest construction work began in the 1630s under Count Carlo III, who named Isola Bella after his wife and commissioned the palace.
The three main islands take their names from the Borromeo family, who built palaces and gardens here over centuries. Visitors today still see the architecture and landscape designs that reflect the taste and power of this noble dynasty.
Ferries run regularly between the islands and the lakeside towns, making it possible to visit several locations in a single day. Schedules vary by season, so checking departure times in advance helps plan the route.
White peacocks roam freely through the garden on Isola Madre, moving among visitors and exotic plants. The English garden on this island hosts over 2,000 plant species from around the world, including rare tropical specimens.
