Museo archeologico regionale eoliano

The Museo archeologico regionale eoliano occupies six connected pavilions within Lipari Castle and displays objects spanning from prehistoric times through the classical Greek period. The collections trace human settlement and cultural development across this island archipelago over many centuries.

The museum opened in 1954 and preserves artifacts ranging from the Neolithic period through Medieval times. Its collections document how this island group was inhabited and shaped by different peoples across thousands of years.

The museum houses the world's largest collection of miniature Greek theatrical masks, reflecting the performance traditions that flourished across ancient Mediterranean cultures. These objects reveal the artistic practices that shaped life in this island community.

The building sits on the hilltop of the castle complex, with stairs and pathways crossing uneven ground throughout. Comfortable shoes and unhurried pacing help visitors navigate the terrain and view the various sections at leisure.

The museum's Vulcanological Section displays geological specimens documenting the volcanic formation and evolution of the archipelago. This collection shows how volcanic activity shaped the landscape and human settlement across these islands.
