Riserva naturale Le Montagne delle Felci e dei Porri, Regional nature reserve in Salina Island, Sicily, Italy.
Riserva naturale Le Montagne delle Felci e dei Porri is a protected area on Salina Island in Sicily comprising two extinct volcanoes with Monte Fossa delle Felci rising to 962 meters and Monte dei Porri to 860 meters. The reserve covers roughly 1,079 hectares and is characterized by chestnut and oak forests.
The reserve received official designation through a regional decree in March 1984, marking an important step to preserve Sicilian natural areas. This decision reflected growing recognition of the need to protect these volcanic islands.
The place is known for Malvasia wine production, with growers maintaining traditional methods in designated areas throughout the reserve. Visitors can observe how agriculture and nature conservation exist side by side here.
The eastern section with Monte Fossa delle Felci offers well-marked trails through forests with better signage and easier access points. Wear sturdy footwear and bring water, as the higher areas are exposed and shade is limited.
The area contains special habitats for the endemic Eolian lizard, a species found nowhere else in the world. At the same time, it serves as an important transit zone for migratory birds such as pelicans and cranes.
