Birra Ichnusa, Brewery in Assemini, Italy
Birra Ichnusa is a brewery in Assemini in Italy that produces different beer types with alcohol contents between 4.7 and 5.6 percent. The range includes standard lager, special editions, unpasteurized and unfiltered versions.
The founding took place in 1912 in Cagliari before the location moved to Assemini in 1967. The takeover by Heineken International happened in 1986 and brought new investments in production and distribution.
The name comes from the ancient Greek word for Sardinia and shows the close bond between the beer and the Mediterranean island. Locals drink it today at family gatherings, in bars along the coast and during meals with friends.
The facility sits in the industrial area of Assemini, about six miles (ten kilometers) west of Cagliari on the road to Decimomannu. Visitors can see the exterior grounds but should check beforehand if tours through production areas are offered.
Annual production reached over 400,000 hectoliters in the early 1980s and made the beer known across all of Sardinia. Today the brand is among the most consumed regional beers in Italy.
