The stone bridge spans 62 meters across the Tronto River with a single arch measuring 22 meters in width and 25 meters in height.
Emperor Augustus ordered the construction of this bridge during his reign to connect the Roman provinces of Ascoli and Fermo through an improved road network.
The bridge incorporates the Opus quadratum technique, using precisely cut travertine blocks assembled without mortar, demonstrating Roman engineering methods.
The structure maintains its original function, connecting the city center to the Porta Cappuccina district with a 6.5-meter-wide roadway for vehicles and pedestrians.
The internal structure received concrete reinforcement in 1938, creating an inspection corridor that reveals the original Roman construction techniques.
