National Archeological Museum of Pontecagnano

The National Archaeological Museum of Pontecagnano presents artifacts from excavations revealing an ancient settlement through extensive collections spanning multiple periods. The materials are arranged in six chronologically organized exhibition sections that document different phases of occupation at the site.

Systematic archaeological excavations beginning in 1962 uncovered a necropolis with thousands of graves spanning multiple millennia. The discoveries show how the settlement evolved from an early community into an important urban center over many centuries.

The museum displays objects that show exchanges between local populations and Greek colonists, including imported items found in burial collections. These pieces reveal the economic and social connections that existed across the Mediterranean world.

The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday and provides wheelchair access throughout the exhibition areas. Plan adequate time to explore the collections thoughtfully across the chronologically arranged sections.

The necropolis contains burials spanning roughly nine thousand years, showing extraordinary continuous use of the site over an exceptionally long timespan. This rare duration allows visitors to trace societal and cultural development across vastly extended periods of time.
