Church of Saint-Mary of Aurio

Church of Saint-Mary of Aurio, Romanesque church in Lecce, Italy.

The Church of Saint-Mary of Aurio is a Romanesque church building in Lecce featuring rounded arches, Corinthian columns, and a deep arched tympanum on its facade. The interior follows traditional religious proportions with a central nave and supporting structural elements.

The building was constructed in the final decades of the 16th century under the direction of Michele Coluccio, a member of the Theatine religious order. It later served as a parish church from 1606 until 1958 before its role changed.

The four niches between the columns hold statues of religious figures, including representations of Saint Peter and Saint Paul. These sculptures reflect the artistic craftsmanship typical of churches from this period.

The central location in Lecce makes it accessible for visitors exploring the architectural landmarks of the historic district. The setting allows you to visit the church alongside other nearby monuments.

A 14th-century fresco depicting the Madonna inspired the establishment of this church and shaped its religious importance. This artistic work was the reason why this location was chosen to build the sanctuary.
