Sanctuary of Sant'Oronzo fuori le mura

The sanctuary features neoclassical architecture with a Greek cross plan, four Corinthian pilasters, and a prominent dome atop the limestone structure.

The current church was constructed in 1912 by architect Gaetano Capozza, replacing an earlier chapel from 1655 at the site of Saint Orontius's martyrdom.

Each August 25, the Archbishop of Lecce conducts a mass at the sanctuary during the second day of the city's patron saint celebrations.

Nine small chapels line the path leading to the sanctuary, marking the final route of Saint Orontius before his execution in 68 CE.

The sanctuary houses a papier-mâché statue of the saint and a glass-encased sculpture depicting the severed head of the martyr.
