Between 1562 and 1564, Abbess Chiarina Colonna initiated construction of a new church behind the ancient chapel, which underwent complete reconstruction in 1685 by Giovanni Antonio De Rossi.
The church functions as the national religious center for Syriac Catholics in Rome, conducting services according to the Syrian-Antioch liturgical traditions.
