Santa Maria della Concezione in Campo Marzio, church building in Rome, Italy
Santa Maria della Concezione in Campo Marzio is a neoclassical church with a distinctive three-arched portico that opens onto an internal courtyard. The main building displays neoclassical architectural features throughout its structure and proportions.
Construction started in 1562 under Abbess Chiarina Colonna behind an ancient chapel and was completely redesigned in 1685 by Giovanni Antonio De Rossi. This redesign established the neoclassical form that defines the building today.
This is the national center for Rome's Syriac Catholic community, where services follow Syrian-Antioch liturgical traditions that differ from standard Roman Catholic practices. The space reflects the heritage and spiritual customs of this Eastern Christian tradition.
The church at Piazza Campo Marzio 45 remains active and open for regular services to both local worshippers and visitors. Plan your visit to align with service times and respect the space as a place of active worship.
Excavations in 1777 uncovered a significant column that later became the base for the Immaculate Conception statue in Piazza di Spagna. This archaeological piece connects this church to one of Rome's most famous locations.
