Palazzo delle Poste

Palazzo delle Poste, Modernist palace in La Spezia, Italy.

Description

Palazzo delle Poste is a four-story building with a U-shaped layout, exposing brick walls and travertine cladding that gives it a distinctive modern look. A central clock tower rises above the structure and is reached through symmetrical staircases on both sides.

History

Architect Angiolo Mazzoni designed and completed this postal building in 1933 following modern design principles of the time. It replaced earlier postal offices that were scattered across different locations in the city.

Culture

The clock tower holds a large Futurist mosaic depicting themes of communication and connection between people. Inside, visitors walk past different colored marble types that create visual interest throughout the halls.

Practical

The main entrance sits above street level and requires climbing a grand travertine staircase to reach the building. Services and spaces are spread across multiple floors, so visitors should be prepared to navigate the interior.

Did you know?

The building features a remarkable collection of marble types including Portoro, Portargento, Zebrino, and Tivoli Travertine spread throughout its interior spaces. Each marble variety comes from different Italian regions and creates striking color combinations in the hallways.
