Raticosa pass, Mountain pass in Province of Florence, Italy
Raticosa Pass is a mountain pass through the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, sitting at around 968 meters, near the town of Firenzuola in the Province of Florence. The road crosses the ridge through a long series of sharp curves that link Tuscany to Emilia-Romagna on the other side.
The road through the pass was built in 1762 under Grand Duke Francis I of Tuscany, opening a faster connection between Florence and Bologna. It became one of the main routes for trade and travel across the Apennines for the following centuries.
The pass is a known stop for motorcycle riders and car lovers who enjoy the winding road through the Apennines. Groups of riders often gather here on weekends, making the spot feel like a meeting point rather than just a crossing.
The pass is reached via Strada Statale 65, which handles all types of vehicles traveling between Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna. Weather in this part of the Apennines can change fast, so checking conditions before you set off is a good habit, especially outside summer.
Since 1977, the pass has served as the finish line of a regularity race for historic vehicles starting from Bologna. Each year, drivers of old cars and motorcycles arrive here to complete a route that echoes what travelers once did on this same road centuries ago.
