Province of Florence, Former administrative province in Tuscany, Italy.
The Province of Florence was a former administrative territory in Tuscany with the city of Florence as its capital until 2014. The area contained 44 municipalities in the northeastern region and was connected by a network of roads centered around the Arno River valley.
The province was established in 1865 and grew from a Roman military settlement into a major Renaissance center between the 14th and 16th centuries. This transformation made the region one of Europe's most influential areas.
The region was a major center for artists and thinkers who shaped European culture. Names like Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo came from this area, and their works show how innovative people here were.
The territory is easily reached through the main city of Florence, which has good rail and road connections. Most places in the region are within short driving distances.
The Florentine dialect that arose here became the foundation of modern Italian language and is still spoken in the region today. The Florentine florin was an important currency that set standards for European trade.
