Ponte della Fortezza, Arch bridge in Pisa, Italy
Ponte della Fortezza is an arch bridge crossing the Arno River with three concrete arches clad in cut stone. The structure spans roughly 90 meters and rises about 14 meters above the water.
The bridge was originally built between 1262 and 1286 under the name Ponte della Spina and kept that name for centuries. It was renamed in 1512 when the Fortezza Nuova was constructed nearby.
The structure takes its name from a fortress built nearby in the 16th century that shaped how this river crossing developed. Visitors can see today how it reflects the military planning of that era.
The bridge is open to both pedestrians and vehicles, offering good views of the river from its arches. It lies within easy walking distance of the city center and is straightforward to reach on foot.
The longest span between arches reaches about 38 meters, showcasing the technical skill of medieval builders. The structure was later updated by reinforcing the original stone with concrete.
