San Matteo

San Matteo is a church with a single-hall interior in Pisa, whose walls and ceiling are decorated with frescoes from the 18th century. The building displays Romanesque features such as blind arcading and diamond patterns that come from the original construction phase.

The church was founded in the early medieval period and came under Benedictine ownership in 1027. In the 17th century, the facade underwent a comprehensive redesign that corresponds to the building's current appearance.

The church displays frescoes that reflect the artistic style of the 18th century and preserve influences from the late Renaissance. Visitors can observe the ceiling painting, which presents religious themes in the solemn manner typical of that period.

The original bell tower structure was destroyed in the early 16th century due to military events and was never rebuilt. This makes the church visually different from many other religious buildings in the city, as its outline stands out without this characteristic tower.
