Ponte della Scienza, Footbridge and Italian national heritage in Ostiense district, Rome, Italy
Ponte della Scienza is a footbridge and cycling route across the Tiber that connects two districts of Rome. The structure features separate pathways for pedestrians and cyclists, with wooden surfaces for walkers and concrete sections for bikes, plus neon strips under the railings that light the way at night.
The project emerged from an international design competition in 2008 and opened to the public in 2014. Its construction was part of Rome's effort to improve connections along the Tiber riverbanks.
The bridge links two neighborhoods with distinct identities while its contemporary design stands alongside industrial relics of earlier times. Walking across it, visitors see how modern structures fit into areas shaped by their manufacturing past.
The bridge is spacious enough for pedestrians and cyclists to use simultaneously, with clear markings showing which path belongs to whom. At night, the neon strips under the railings guide your steps and make crossing safe and easy to see.
The bridge rests on two contrasting supports that approach from opposite sides of the Tiber and meet asymmetrically in the middle. This unbalanced design creates a distinctive visual feature that stands out when viewed from different angles.
