Sanctuary of the Public Lares, Archaeological ruins in Pompeii, Italy.
The Sanctuary of the Public Lares is an ancient worship site in Pompeii with multiple niches and columns positioned along its walls that once held marble statues and ornamental elements. A central altar formed the focal point of the structure, while plinths beneath the wall niches provided their support.
The sanctuary underwent reconstruction following the earthquake of 62 AD and became dedicated to worshipping household deities known as the Lares. This dedication reflects how Romans reorganized their community religious priorities after major disasters.
This sanctuary served as a gathering place where citizens honored the protective spirits they believed watched over their homes and families in Roman belief. The arrangement of niches and central altar shows how this space functioned for regular religious practice.
The site sits along Via dell'Abbondanza and is easily accessible from Via Villa dei Misteri. A visit requires no special preparation, though afternoon sun can be intense.
Eight marble plinths found at this location suggest it was an important public worship center that went beyond typical private household devotion. These plinths reveal that Romans honored their protective spirits in communal spaces as well.
