Teatro Mediterraneo, Open-air theatre in Bisceglie, Italy.
Teatro Mediterraneo is an open-air theatre on the western coast of Bisceglie with semicircular seating for about 600 spectators facing the Adriatic Sea. The rows are carved into the hillside and provide views of the water and nearby landmarks such as Trani Cathedral.
The theatre was built in 1995 as part of a coastal development project designed to bring forgotten areas of the region back to use. The initiative emerged from the idea of reviving abandoned lands where the site once stood.
The name references the Mediterranean and its connecting role between cultures in this region. Today visitors can watch performances outdoors while sitting on the hillside, experiencing how the sea becomes part of the show.
The hillside provides natural rows with stable seating from which the stage and sea are clearly visible. The location sits several kilometers outside Bisceglie's center and is best visited during milder parts of the day.
Architect Amedeo Clavarino designed the space to blend seamlessly with the landscape without destroying nature or building large structures. The design shows how modern theatre can coexist with environmental care by working with the hillside's existing forms.
