Roman villa of Mura di Santo Stefano, Roman archaeological site in Anguillara Sabazia, Italy.
The Roman villa of Mura di Santo Stefano is a multi-story building made of concrete with brick facing, preserved up to 18 meters in height. The structure displays arches framed by yellow and red bricks and contains corridors showing traces of original marble wall cladding.
The villa was built in the late 2nd century and overlaid an earlier rural villa from the 1st century. This layering shows how the site served as a residence for wealthy people across multiple generations.
The residence reflects the lifestyle of wealthy Romans through its mix of functional spaces and decorated interiors. Rooms were lined with different marble types, showing the high social standing of those who lived here.
The site is located three kilometers south of Lake Bracciano, making it easy to combine with a visit to the lake. The preserved structures are directly accessible and give a good insight into Roman architecture without requiring special arrangements.
The building features a central courtyard supported by pillars, surrounded by three floors with cross vaults overhead. This sophisticated vault system was an impressive engineering achievement by Roman builders of that era.
