Monumento naturale Galeria Antica

Monumento naturale Galeria Antica is a protected natural area in the Roman countryside with woodland and rocky outcrops along the Arrone River. The landscape combines Mediterranean vegetation with scattered ruins perched on a tuff plateau, creating a terrain where forest and ancient stone structures coexist.

The protected area was established in 1999 to preserve medieval buildings and possible Etruscan artifacts scattered across the site. Settlement at this location extends back to ancient times, with the spot lying along a historic road network through the region.

The name comes from the ancient settlement of Galeria, and the landscape reflects layers of different periods visible in the scattered ruins. Walking through, visitors notice how nature has reclaimed these spaces while traces of past occupation remain woven into the terrain.

Visits require advance arrangement through RomaNatura, the organization managing the site. It is best to contact them beforehand to arrange access and receive guidance on navigating the terrain safely.

The area remained uninhabited for two centuries, allowing its ecosystem to recover undisturbed. Today, visitors can spot birds of prey including kestrels, owls, and buzzards soaring above the woodlands and scattered stone remains.
