Diocesan Museum of Amalfi, Religious art museum in Amalfi, Italy

The Diocesan Museum of Amalfi occupies the Basilica del Crocifisso, a ninth-century building displaying classic Romanesque features. Inside, the spaces hold religious art, sacred objects, and ancient sculptures spanning different periods.

The basilica originated in 596 and underwent major modifications around 1100 when a new cathedral was built beside it. These changes connected two structures into one religious complex that strengthened the town's spiritual center.

The collection reflects the deep religious importance of Amalfi through sacred vestments and liturgical treasures on display. Roman sarcophagi with mythological scenes show how classical traditions shaped local artistic life.

The museum is housed in a historic building with good accessibility for all visitors. Plan to walk slowly through the rooms to fully notice the details of the artworks and architectural elements.

The museum preserves fragments of a Romanesque ambo made between 1174 and 1202, decorated with intricate mosaics created in the Cosmatesque style. These pieces show the skilled craftsmanship and artistic vision of the medieval period in the region.
