Torre dello Ziro

Torre dello Ziro is a cylindrical stone tower standing on a hilltop above Amalfi and Atrani, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The structure was built from massive stone blocks and forms a solitary presence on this isolated height.

The tower was built in 1480, though it rests on foundations from the 12th century. It served as part of a defense network against maritime raids during the Amalfi Duchy period.

The tower is tied to dark Renaissance events that later inspired writers and storytellers. This history has made the location one that locals still talk about today.

The path to the tower follows marked mountain trails starting from Pontone and requires several hours of walking. Visitors should wear good hiking shoes and bring plenty of water, as the route is demanding and offers little shade.

The tower inspired John Webster's play The Duchess of Malfi, which was based on real events. The drama brought literary fame to a place that might otherwise have remained known only locally.
