Basilica del Crocifisso

The Basilica del Crocifisso is a church building with three naves in Amalfi, connected to the neighboring Cathedral through a hall lined with ancient marble columns. It blends Romanesque, Byzantine, and Baroque style features and serves as a museum for religious objects.

Records mention this church as far back as the 6th century, and it experienced an attack in the Middle Ages when sacred relics were taken. In the 20th century, added Baroque elements were methodically removed to expose the original Medieval structure beneath.

The space is named after Christ's cross, which holds deep meaning for the community. You can see religious artworks and objects displayed here that reflect how this place has drawn believers across generations.

The church was restored to its Medieval form through a major project starting in 1931, work that lasted an entire decade. This lengthy restoration revealed much about the original Medieval architecture and how it had been hidden beneath later additions.
