Palazzo dei Tribunali, Renaissance courthouse and palace in Prati district, Rome, Italy
Palazzo dei Tribunali is a monumental courthouse and palace in the Prati district. The structure houses Italy's Supreme Court of Cassation and contains the Judicial Public Library for legal research and proceedings.
Construction of the palace began in 1888 under architect Guglielmo Calderini and was completed in 1910. It was built to represent Rome's transformation into the capital of the newly unified Italian Kingdom.
The palace contains significant frescoes that were created between 1909 and 1918, adorning the main halls with elaborate artistic decoration. These paintings shape the visual character and cultural identity of the interior spaces.
The building is partially open to the public, with the exterior facade easily viewed from the surrounding streets. Check ahead for information about interior access, as visiting hours and permissions can be limited depending on court activities.
While excavating for the building's foundation, workers uncovered ancient remains including those of a historical figure and an ivory doll from antiquity. These discoveries are now on display at Rome's Centrale Montemartini museum.
