Piazza del Duomo, square in Trento, Italy

Piazza del Duomo is the main square at the heart of Trento, surrounded by historic buildings and the Cathedral of San Vigilio. The expansive space features two fountains, colorful frescoes on building facades, and arcaded passages dating from the 14th to 16th centuries.

The square served as the city's main gathering place since Roman times, functioning as the ancient forum. In the 1970s, local authorities converted it into a pedestrian zone to protect its historic character and make it accessible for walkers.

The square serves as a gathering place where locals and visitors walk, sit at cafes, and shop for handmade goods and regional products. The colorful frescoes painted on the building facades show scenes from history, myths, and religious stories that blend into the everyday rhythm of the square.

The square is located about 550 meters from Trento's train station and is easily accessible by public transport, with several bus stops nearby. Wear comfortable shoes to explore the surroundings, and plan at least an hour to view the buildings, statues, and artworks.

At the center of the square stands a linden tree with a special story, originally planted in the 1800s during the Napoleonic era as a symbol of freedom. Though replaced over time, a new tree continues to grow in this same spot today.
