San Domenico Hotel, Hotel in Taormina, Sicily, Italy
San Domenico Hotel is a historic building in Taormina built on the foundation of a 15th-century monastery and now operating as a hotel. The structure combines an older wing with original cloister walls, cloisters, and vaulted ceilings with a newer section added in the late 1800s, designed in the Liberty style popular at that time.
The building originated as a Dominican monastery in the 15th century but was converted into a hotel in 1896 by the Rosso family. During World War II, it served as the residence of German Field Marshal Albert Kesselring, becoming a significant location during the war years.
The building carries the name of Saint Dominic, reflecting the religious roots embedded in its structure. Today, visitors experience it as a place where monastic heritage and contemporary hospitality coexist, with the layered history visible in every corridor and room.
The hotel sits on a hilltop overlooking the Ionian Sea and can be reached by driving along the scenic coastal road or by train to the nearby station. Staff assist with luggage upon arrival and parking is available, with the drive up the cliff side offering views along the way.
The hotel served as the filming location for the second season of 'The White Lotus' television series, drawing new visitors, though many guests appreciate the quiet pools and gardens for their own merits regardless of the show. The series brought global attention to the location, but its enduring appeal remains the timeless blend of history and comfort.
