St. George Church, Byzantine church in Madaba, Jordan.
St. George Church is a church building in Madaba, Jordan, known for its remarkable floor mosaic. The mosaic is made up of approximately 800,000 individual pieces and depicts a detailed map of biblical sites across Palestine and Jerusalem.
The current structure was built in 1896 and replaced an earlier Byzantine church from 560 AD that was damaged by an earthquake in 746 AD. The rebuilding preserved the precious mosaic work and made the site an important witness to the region's Christian history.
The church functions as a place of worship for the Orthodox Christian community while preserving ancient mosaic artistry from the Byzantine period.
Visitors can explore the church during the day and examine the detailed mosaic at their own pace. Ongoing restoration work does not affect access to the site, so you can see the ancient artwork in its entirety.
The mosaic is one of the oldest known geographical depictions of Jerusalem and the Holy Land from classical antiquity. This rare cartographic representation reveals the importance of this location for documenting biblical geography.
