Art Tower Mito, Art gallery in Mito, Japan
Art Tower Mito is an art gallery in Mito that consists of a 100-meter titanium tower, a concert hall seating 680 people, a theater with 636 seats, and a contemporary art gallery. These buildings work together to offer different types of art and cultural events in one location.
The complex opened in March 1990 to mark the 100th anniversary of Mito's founding as a city. Architect Arata Isozaki designed the site with a fresh and forward-looking approach.
The facility displays works by Japanese and international artists in rotating exhibitions that connect with contemporary art trends. These spaces also host theatrical performances and musical concerts, making the place an active center where different art forms come together.
Visitors can reach an observation floor at 86 meters through 70 circular windows that look out over the Ibaraki Prefecture landscape. It helps to allow time to explore the different exhibition spaces and performance venues at a relaxed pace.
The tower structure is made up of 28 tetrahedrons arranged at different angles and covered with titanium panels. This was one of the first large-scale uses of this material in Japan.
