Ibaraki Prefectural Museum of History, History museum and public archive in Mito, Japan
The Ibaraki Prefectural Museum of History is a history museum and public archive in Mito, the capital of Ibaraki Prefecture, with both indoor galleries and historic structures on its grounds. The outdoor area features original buildings from different periods that visitors can walk around and explore alongside the indoor collections.
The museum was founded in 1974 with a focus on the period when the Tokugawa clan governed the Mito domain. Over time, historic buildings were added to the grounds to make the region's past more tangible for visitors.
The collection brings together everyday objects from the Ibaraki region, including tools, clothing, and household items from different periods. These objects give a direct sense of how ordinary people in this area once lived and worked.
The museum is a short walk from Mito Station and also has parking available for those arriving by car. Allow enough time for both the indoor galleries and the outdoor buildings, as the grounds take a while to explore at a relaxed pace.
Some of the buildings on the grounds were relocated from other sites across the prefecture rather than built here originally. They were moved to prevent them from falling into ruin, which means the museum also serves as a kind of shelter for endangered structures.
