Mito Castle, Japanese castle in Mito, Japan
The castle site contains moats, stone walls, and the reconstructed Otemon Gate, which stands as one of the largest wooden castle gates in Japan.
Founded in 1190 by Daijo Sukemoto, the castle changed ownership multiple times until the Tokugawa clan established control during the Edo period.
The Kodokan school, established in 1841 within the castle grounds, educated samurai sons in disciplines including Confucian studies and martial arts.
The castle site sits 10 minutes from Mito Station, with direct train connections to Tokyo Station taking approximately one hour by Limited Express.
Modern schools on the former castle grounds maintain the historical connection through gates and fences constructed in traditional castle architectural style.
