Daisen, Mountain town in Saihaku District, Japan

Daisen is a town in western Tottori Prefecture that spreads from the Sea of Japan coastline inland to Mount Daisen, encompassing farmland, forests, and residential areas across varied terrain. The town is served by the JR West San'in Line with several stations and includes schools that form the backbone of local daily life.

Daisen was created in 2005 through the merger of Nakayama and Nawa towns, bringing together two separate communities into one municipality. The area had long been governed under the Ikeda clan during the Edo period, and this administrative heritage continues to shape the town today.

The Daisen-ji Temple serves as a gathering point where visitors experience traditions tied to mountain worship that have remained central to local identity for generations. Walking through the temple grounds and surrounding forest paths, one encounters spaces shaped by centuries of spiritual practice and reverence for the natural landscape.

The town is accessible by train via several stations on the San'in Line, making it easy to move around and reach different areas. The best times to visit are autumn when forests show their fall colors and winter when mountain slopes fill with snow.

Mount Daisen receives substantial snowfall in winter that transforms the entire landscape and attracts winter sports enthusiasts from across the region. This seasonal shift demonstrates how dramatically the mountains shape the rhythm of life throughout the year.
