Saihaku district

Saihaku district, Administrative district in Tottori Prefecture, Japan

Saihaku district is an administrative area in western Tottori Prefecture that brings together four separate municipalities. The region spans varied landscapes including mountainous terrain, agricultural areas, and smaller urban centers.

The district was formed in 1896 following the merger of two earlier administrative divisions, part of the widespread administrative restructuring during the Meiji period. This reorganization still shapes the region's boundaries and structure today.

The region is known for its farming traditions that have shaped local communities for generations, with crops like pears and yams forming part of everyday life. These agricultural practices remain visible in the landscape and continue to influence how people work and interact with the land.

The area is best explored by taking time to visit the different municipalities and their local attractions at a relaxed pace. Public transportation connects the towns, though having a vehicle is helpful for reaching more distant locations.

Mount Daisen, one of the highest peaks in the Chugoku Mountains, dominates the landscape and serves as a starting point for hiking and nature exploration. Its prominence shapes the character of the region and offers spectacular views from above.
