Kumamoto Prefectural Museum of Art, Art museum in Kumamoto Castle Park, Japan

The Kumamoto Prefectural Museum of Art is located in the northwest section of Kumamoto Castle Park. The modern building houses over 5,000 artworks, including Japanese, Western, and international pieces.

The museum opened in a building designed by renowned architect Kunio Maekawa. The collection documents the artistic history of the region over several centuries.

The museum displays works by local artists and traditional Japanese art forms rooted in the region. Visitors can observe how these artistic traditions developed over time and what they mean to the community today.

The museum sits easily within the castle grounds and is accessible by public transportation. Plan to spend two to three hours for a relaxed visit.

The lower level holds a permanent exhibition with replicas of painted kofun tombs from 200-600 CE, offering insight into ancient Japanese burial customs. This display showcases rare examples of decorative traditions from this early period.
