Kumamoto Prefectural Ancient Burial Mound Museum

The museum houses full-size replicas of twelve ancient burial chamber interiors, displaying decorative elements and artifacts from the Kofun period.

Completed in 1992, the museum preserves and exhibits decorated tumuli from 400-700 AD, with many burial mounds concentrated along the Kikuchi river basin.

The museum exhibits demonstrate burial practices of ancient Japanese elites through artifacts including bronze mirrors, jewelry, gold headwear, pottery, and ceremonial objects.

Located at 3085 Kaomachi Iwabaru, the museum opens from 9:30 AM to 5:15 PM and charges 410 yen for adults, with free entry for high school students.

The museum building, designed by Tadao Ando, incorporates the shape of traditional keyhole-shaped burial mounds and overlooks several unopened ancient tumuli.
