Riddell-Wright Memorial Hall, Biographical museum and cultural property in Kurokami, Japan.
Riddell-Wright Memorial Hall is a biographical museum in Kurokami devoted to the lives and work of Hannah Riddell and Ada Wright. The building displays documents, personal letters from Empress Teimei, and photographs from Kaishun Hospital where both women worked.
Hannah Riddell founded Kaishun Hospital in 1895 to care for leprosy patients, supported by donations from churches and organizations in Japan and the United Kingdom. The building was later adapted as a memorial hall and designated a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 1996.
The hall preserves the story of two women whose lives centered on medical care and community service in Japan. Visitors can see how their work shaped daily life and patient treatment during a transformative period.
The museum welcomes individual visitors during its regular hours, while groups should arrange visits in advance to join tours led by the hall director. It helps to check current opening hours before visiting and allow time to explore the displays carefully.
The building once served as a laboratory facility for leprosy research before being officially converted to a memorial hall in 1994. This transformation shows how the site evolved from medical research to historical preservation.
