Natsume Sōseki's Former Uchitsuboi Residence, Literary residence in Chūō-ku, Japan.

Natsume Soseki's former Uchitsuboi Residence is a single-story wooden building constructed in traditional Japanese style from that period. The house now contains exhibits with reproductions of his manuscripts and photographs documenting his years teaching in the area.

Soseki moved into this residence in 1896 while working as an English teacher at a local high school, staying for about a year and a half. This period marked a significant chapter before he devoted himself entirely to writing.

The house reflects how Soseki lived during his time as a teacher in Kumamoto, before he became one of Japan's greatest writers. Visitors can sense the connection between this modest home and the literary work that would later define his career.

The residence is located near a bus stop, making it easily accessible by public transportation. Wear comfortable shoes since you will need to remove them when entering the traditional rooms with tatami mat flooring.

His first daughter was born in this house, making it a personal milestone in his family life. The building was also his fifth home in Kumamoto before he left the city to pursue his literary career.
