Bakkai Station, Railway station in Wakkanai, Japan
Bakkai Station is a former railway station in Wakkanai, Hokkaido, with two opposing side platforms. These platforms form a passing loop on a single-track line in northern Japan.
The station began operations on June 25, 1924, as part of the Japanese Government Railways Teshio Kita Line. It was later integrated into the Soya Main Line.
The station sits in the Kutonebetsu district and serves travelers heading to view Mount Rishiri across the sea. The simple structure reflects the isolation of this northern region.
The station operates without staff and features a level crossing connecting the platforms. Visitors should expect minimal daily train service due to limited usage.
This is the northernmost unstaffed railway station in Japan, reflecting the special conditions of rail service in remote regions. Its minimal daily ridership shows how transportation patterns have shifted in rural areas.
