Bandai-Azuma Roadway, Mountain road in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan
The Bandai-Azuma Roadway runs approximately 29 kilometers through the Azuma Mountain Range and reaches elevations around 1,620 meters. The route passes through mountain terrain and provides access to hiking trails and viewing areas throughout the region.
The road was completed in 1959 and created a direct connection between the Takayu Hot Springs area and Tsuchiyu Pass. This opened mountain terrain that was previously difficult to traverse into an accessible transit route.
The road connects traditional hot spring areas with mountain terrain, reflecting how locals and visitors have long traveled between these valued destinations.
The road closes from mid-November through early April due to heavy snowfall and requires caution during poor weather conditions. Several parking areas along the route provide access to hiking trails and viewpoints.
Since 2013 the road has been toll-free, offering free access to volcanic landscapes and views of Mount Azuma's crater. This change made the remote mountain route accessible to casual visitors without cost.
