Fukushima, Capital city in northern Nakadori region, Japan

This city sits in a wide basin in the northern Nakadori region, surrounded by forested slopes, and extends across numerous valleys with orchards and hot springs. The layout feels open, with wide streets, multistory residential districts, and a mix of modern commercial centers and quieter neighborhoods.

The area was once called Minekoshi and served as an administrative center from the 5th century, when the Yamato court appointed a local administrator. Later events in the 20th century reshaped the cityscape through reconstruction and modern infrastructure.

The railway station building combines glass with local materials and displays murals inside that show regional motifs. Visitors notice bilingual signs on streets and in shops, reflecting everyday life in this prefectural capital.

An information center near the railway station offers maps and bicycle rental to move around different parts of town. Many areas are walkable, while a local bus system connects more distant points.

Mount Shinobu holds around 60 Buddhist figures carved into rock faces roughly 300 years ago, known as the Iwaya Kannon carvings. These reliefs sit partly hidden among trees and paths, surprising hikers who climb the slope.
