Iō-ji, Buddhist temple in Fukushima, Japan
Iō-ji is a Buddhist temple on Mount Rurikō featuring a main hall and a medicine hall housing a Yakushi Buddha statue. The elevated grounds are dotted with various stone monuments arranged across the temple property.
This temple was founded in 826 during the Heian period and served as the family temple of the Satō clan. The Satō family held control over the Iizaka region under Ōshū Fujiwara rule.
The temple holds memories of the Satō brothers, two local warriors whose personal belongings are displayed here. Visitors can trace their story through the objects kept within the temple halls.
This temple sits on elevated ground and is accessible by foot from Iōji-mae Station. Visitors should be prepared for stairs when heading to the main temple area.
A camellia tree on the grounds sheds its buds before blooming according to local stories. This recalls the grieving mother Otowa and her connection to the place.
