Fukushima Prefectural Azuma Sports Park, park in Japan
Fukushima Prefectural Azuma Sports Park is a large sports facility next to the Arakawa River nestled in the foothills of the Azuma mountain range, spanning over 100 hectares. It features a baseball stadium with 30,000 capacity, an athletics stadium with 20,000 capacity, a gymnasium with an indoor pool, various sports courts, a rose garden with more than 300 varieties, and historic buildings from the Edo and Meiji periods.
The park opened in 1995 to host a major national sports event and has grown into a venue for significant sporting competitions. The baseball stadium later served as a venue for the 2020 Olympics, reinforcing the park's importance at the national level.
The park reflects the farming heritage of the region, particularly through the athletics stadium whose shape echoes local peach cultivation. This design choice shows how the place connects to the area's pride in agriculture and traditional crops.
The park is about 29 minutes by bus from Fukushima Station with convenient access, as the bus stop is located near the complex. Visitors should note that the park closes on Tuesdays unless a holiday falls on that day, and also closes during New Year from December 29 to January 3.
A lined pathway of 116 ginkgo trees stretches about 520 meters from the athletics stadium to the parking area, turning a glowing yellow in late October. These illuminated trees become particularly striking at dusk and draw many visitors eager to photograph the seasonal display.
