Iwakuni Station, Railway station in Iwakuni, Japan
Iwakuni Station is a railway interchange in town with three platforms and six tracks, connected by an elevated passenger concourse above ground level. The facility features both side and center platforms that allow passengers to access multiple train lines.
The station opened in 1897 as part of the Sanyo Railway's expansion from Hiroshima toward Tokuyama. Between 1929 and 1942 it carried the name Marifu Station before reverting to its original designation.
The station acts as a starting point for travelers heading toward the historic Kintai Bridge and the town's traditional gardens and temples. Many visitors begin their journey here to explore the local heritage and everyday rhythm of the community.
The station sees fewer crowds during early morning and late afternoon hours, making navigation easier for new visitors. Look for signage in romaji and follow overhead indicators to locate the correct platforms for your destination.
The station sits on one of the early trunk lines that shaped railway development in the region during the late 1800s. Its location made it a crucial transfer point for both passengers and commerce as Japan's transport network took form.
