Esan Prefectural Natural Park, Prefectural Natural Park in southwest Hokkaido, Japan
Esan Prefectural Natural Park is a protected area in southwest Hokkaido with coastal areas, forests, and mountain sections. The site features several peaks and many hiking trails of varying difficulty.
The area became an officially protected park in 1961, safeguarding a landscape shaped by volcanic forces. Mount Esan last showed activity in 1874.
The name Esan comes from the Ainu language and means fire. When azaleas bloom in late spring, visitors walk across the mountain slopes to see the dense clusters of flowers.
The best time to hike is between May and October when trails are open and weather is more stable. Wear layers since fog and wind are common throughout the year.
Alpine plants grow here that are typically found on mountains much higher up. The volcanic soil combined with fog rolling in from the strait and shade from surrounding terrain creates the damp, cool conditions these plants need.
