Hells of Beppu, Geothermal hot springs in Beppu, Japan
The Hells of Beppu contain seven distinct hot springs featuring steaming ponds with different colors, bubbling mud pools, and geothermal features at temperatures reaching 98 degrees Celsius.
During the early development of Beppu, these natural hot springs became observation sites, with Chinoike Hell recognized as the first natural hell formation in Japan.
The term 'jigoku meguri' represents the traditional Japanese practice of visiting multiple hot springs sites to observe their natural thermal characteristics and mineral compositions.
Five hells stand in the Kannawa district while two remain in Shibaseki, with admission fees of 450 yen per site or 2200 yen for a combined ticket valid for two days.
The Oniyama Hell maintains Japan's first crocodile breeding facility, using natural geothermal heat to sustain approximately 80 crocodiles in specialized thermal environments.
