Beppu Tower, Observation tower in Beppu, Japan.
Beppu Tower is an observation tower with 17 floors rising about 90 meters above the city. It features multiple viewing platforms from which visitors can see across the city, the bay, and the thermal areas surrounding Beppu.
The tower opened in 1957 and was designed with innovative earthquake-resistant construction methods. It was built during a period when Japan was rebuilding its infrastructure in the years after World War II.
This structure is officially recognized as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan and reflects the architectural language of the mid-twentieth century. It remains a landmark that shapes how both locals and visitors see the city.
The tower is open to visitors throughout the year, but there is no elevator access to the observation platforms. If you want to reach the viewing areas, you will need to climb stairs and should wear comfortable shoes.
This tower is part of a special group known as the Tall Six Brothers, a collection of observation towers built with similar designs across Japan. This architectural family shows a remarkable part of Japan's post-war building history.
