Honoo-Honome Shrine, Shinto shrine in Japan
Honoo-Honome Shrine is a simple Shinto place of worship in Beppu located on the slopes of Mount Tsurumi. The grounds feature traditional wooden structures, stone lanterns, and altars where visitors leave small offerings such as coins or food.
The shrine is first mentioned in records from 849 and has served as a place for local prayers and blessings for many centuries. It received official recognition from authorities over the years and remains an important site for local traditions today.
The shrine is dedicated to fire, which is reflected in its name and holds an important role in local beliefs. Visitors can see how people make offerings and participate in ceremonies that express the community's connection with spirits of nature.
The shrine is easily accessible with a simple entrance marked by a traditional torii gate, and the pathways through the grounds are well-maintained. Visitors should behave respectfully, remove their shoes if required, and bow before entering the main area.
The shrine hosted a special arts festival in December 2021 where residents performed a ritual parade in mysterious costumes designed by artist Tamae Hirokawa. These detailed costumes, portraying creatures and deities from local legends, were displayed free for visitors to see through early February.
