Zenpukuji Park

Zenpukuji Park, Metropolitan park in Suginami, Japan

Zenpukuji Park features two connected ponds, an upper and lower one, surrounded by walking paths and wooded areas throughout the grounds. These water bodies serve as the main focal points that organize the layout and movement through the space.

A water source in the upper pond dates back to the 12th century when it was discovered during a drought by Yoritomo Minamoto. This ancient spring has shaped the site for centuries and remains central to what the park is today.

The Benzaiten shrine sits on a small island within the park, showing how water and sacred spaces are connected in Japanese spiritual life. You can observe this sanctuary as part of the natural flow of the park, blending religious meaning with everyday recreation.

Rowboat rentals are available at the upper pond from March through November, with service offered mainly on weekends and holidays. Check ahead as schedules can shift with the seasons and weather conditions.

Each November, the 'Trolls in the Park' art exhibition brings contemporary installations throughout the grounds, placing sculptures and art pieces among the trees and by the water. This seasonal event adds an unexpected creative layer to the natural setting.
