Kitahama Station, railway station in Abashiri, Hokkaido, Japan
Kitahama Station is a small railway stop on Hokkaido's northern coast that belongs to the Senmo Main Line and serves as the closest station to the Sea of Okhotsk. The building has a retro appearance and features an observation deck where visitors can see the broad sea and the mountains of the Shiretoko Range.
The station is part of the historic Senmo Main Line, which connects the coastal region to the broader railway network. The building preserves an old style that reflects the early railway history of the area.
The station's name refers to its location near the shoreline, where locals and visitors gather to observe the sea. The simple structure and visitor messages left on the walls show how travelers treat this place as a personal meeting point.
The observation deck is open 24 hours a day, making it ideal for watching sunrise and sunset or enjoying quiet views at any time. The small on-site cafe called Teishaba serves hot drinks and local food while you take in the scenery.
During winter months from late January to mid-March, drifting ice covers the coast and creates an unusual scene where ice floes float close to the shore. A special tourist train called Ryuhyo Monogatari runs only during this season, allowing visitors to experience this rare frozen landscape from the train.
