Tammachi Station, railway station in Yokohama, Kanagawa prefecture, Japan
Tammachi Station is an underground railway station on the Tōkyū Tōyoko Line in Kamitan-machi. It features a simple structure with one island platform and two tracks, located about 25 meters (82 feet) below ground on the fourth basement level with safety doors to prevent accidents.
The station opened in 1926 and served for many decades as an above-ground transit point for the growing area. In 2004 it was rebuilt underground as part of a larger project to subway the Tōyoko Line, reopening in 2006 with modern design.
The name Tammachi reflects the historical district where the station sits. It serves as a daily gathering point where residents and workers move through their routines, especially during morning and evening commute times when activity is most visible.
The station is easy to navigate, with elevators and escalators between levels and clear signage in both Japanese and English. Accessible toilets and staff are present to assist visitors of all mobility levels.
The station's redesign was part of a larger undergrounding project that reduced noise and improved the cityscape above ground. A side effect was creating the Tōyoko Flower Greenway, a quiet park about 1.4 kilometers long built on the former elevated track.
