Yagen Valley, Hot spring valley in Aomori Prefecture, Japan
Yagen Valley is a hot spring area in Aomori Prefecture in northern Japan that stretches through a deep mountain gorge. The thermal waters flow between densely forested slopes where Japanese cypress trees line the steep banks.
The thermal springs were discovered in 1615 by soldiers seeking shelter after the fall of the Toyotomi clan during the feudal period. This discovery gradually led to the area becoming a refuge for those seeking the healing properties of the waters.
The name Yagen comes from the shape of its spring source, which resembles a traditional mortar used in Japanese herbal medicine. Visitors can feel this connection to local crafting traditions while exploring the natural setting.
The valley offers three different accommodations and two outdoor baths with water temperatures ranging from 47 to 72 degrees Celsius (117 to 162 degrees Fahrenheit). Visitors should keep in mind that cold months can significantly affect time spent in and around the water.
The natural riverside bath Kappa-no-Yu sits directly in the stream, offering an immersive experience between the flowing waters. Visitors can bathe here while water moves around them, creating a true sense of connection with nature.
